Title: Analysis of Large Networks with Pajek
Speaker: Vladimir Batagelj, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
Date: Tuesday**, January 29, 2008 12:00 - 1:30 pm
Location: DyDan Center, CoRE Bldg, Room 431, Rutgers University, Busch Campus, Piscataway, NJ
** Please note special day. There will be a Pajek hands on mini-course: 1:30 - 3:00pm
Abstract:
Pajek is a program for analysis and visualization of large networks (with several thousands or millions of vertices that can be stored in the computer memory). For analysis of large sparse networks we developed several subquadratic algorithms such as: fast computation of Hummon - Doreian's citation weights, cores and generalized cores, (p,q)-cores, 3-ring and 4-ring weights, islands, fast multiplication of networks, and hierarchical clustering with relational constraint.
Pajek is freely available (for noncommercial use) at its web site: http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/pub/networks/pajek/. An introduction to its use is provided in the book de Nooy W., Mrvar A., Batagelj V.: Exploratory Social Network Analysis with Pajek. Cambridge University Press, 2005.
The seminar will be followed by a demonstration of presented methods in analysis of selected large networks (US patents, Internet Movie Database, networks from Web of Science, Wikipedia, ...).
There will be a Pajek hands on mini-course from 1:30 until 3pm in the same DyDAn seminar room. Attendees could bring their laptops to try the software. This mini-course is open and no registration is necessary.
